Bold by the Beach: A Color-Forward Rehoboth Retreat
When longtime clients call with news of a beach house, you know the design conversation is going to be fun.
This couple, local to Lititz, PA, has trusted me with their home before, so I already knew one very important thing about them: safe is not their style. They gravitate toward bold color, modern silhouettes, and the kind of unexpected moments that make a space feel completely personal. When they began building their beach home in Rehoboth Beach, the goal was clear from the start: create a beach house that felt unique and edgy, while still vibrant enough for the beach and summer season.
Think modern lines. Unexpected color combinations. Durable materials that can handle sandy feet and wet swimsuits. And just enough edge to make every room feel a little bit like a surprise.
This home was designed for gathering; family, friends, beach weekends, and long summer nights that stretch well past sunset.
A Living Room That Sets the Tone
The main living space sets the stage for the entire house.
With soaring 15-foot walls, the room offered the perfect opportunity to go big—and we absolutely did. The star of the space is a bold scribble wallpaper that climbs the full height of the wall, creating instant movement and personality. Against the scale of the room, the pattern feels artistic rather than busy, acting almost like a large-scale mural that anchors the space.
That playful backdrop contrasts beautifully with the darker architectural elements: a dramatic fireplace wall and built-in media cabinet that ground the room and provide balance against the high ceilings.
Furniture in this space had to check two boxes: stylish and beach-house practical.
Enter the teal faux-leather sofas.
Their rich color adds another layer of energy to the room, but the real win is durability. Faux leather is easily wipeable; perfect for sandy beach days and the occasional damp swimsuit after a quick dip in the ocean or pool. It’s the kind of material that lets you relax rather than worry about spills or stains.
Across from the sofas, we introduced a pair of boxy, channel-tufted swivel chairs upholstered in a bold black print. The structured silhouette adds a crisp modern moment while the swivel function keeps the seating flexible for conversation, TV watching, or simply turning toward the view.
Because the room has such strong pattern and color already, the tables needed to complement without competing. Matching coffee tables anchor the center of the seating arrangement, while sleek marble drink tables add just a hint of glam and practicality—perfect for setting down a cold drink after a long day at the beach.
And then…the art.
A pair of heron art prints with a dramatic black background add a touch of playfulness but carry the color story through the room. The result is a space that feels collected, lively, and comfortably modern.
Dining With a Pop of Personality
Just off the living room sits the dining area, designed to flow seamlessly with the energy of the main space.
Instead of defaulting to a typical wood dining table, we selected a textured white dining table that feels fresh and sculptural against the colorful backdrop of the room. Around it, citron-green metal-framed dining chairs bring another punch of personality. Their color practically glows against the neutral table and adds a cheerful, slightly retro edge to the space.
For the head chairs, we switched things up with a bold black patterned fabric that echoes the swivel chairs in the living room. Repeating the pattern creates visual continuity while still allowing each piece to stand on its own.
Lastly, the centerpiece grouping. By adding moss cylinders and a modern black and white sculpture, it not only adds interest, but repeats the green and black of the chairs and making your eye flow smoothly throughout the space.
The result is a dining area that feels playful, modern, and welcoming—exactly the kind of spot where a casual seafood dinner can easily turn into hours of conversation.
Seamless Indoor-Outdoor Living
Of course, no beach house is complete without a strong connection to the outdoors.
Just beyond the living and dining spaces is a covered outdoor living area designed for easy indoor-outdoor flow. Large openings make it feel like an extension of the main living space, creating the perfect transition between lounging inside and relaxing outdoors.
The outdoor furniture keeps the same modern, low-profile aesthetic as the interior but introduces softer textures suited for outdoor living. Plush upholstered seating invites long afternoons with a book or an evening cocktail, while teak chaise lounges add a warm natural element that balances the bold interior palette.
This space will undoubtedly become a summer favorite for the homeowners and their guests—morning coffee, post-beach lounging, sunset drinks, and everything in between.
A Bedroom With Serious Personality
The main bedroom takes a completely different approach but keeps the same fearless spirit.
Instead of leaning into the typical airy beach palette, we continued with the bold and moody theme. The walls and ceiling are wrapped in dramatic black, creating an intimate cocoon that feels striking and unexpectedly sophisticated.
Against the dark backdrop, colorful surfboard artwork instantly pops. The pieces bring in that unmistakable coastal energy while reinforcing the playful personality of the home.
The bedding continues the theme with a graffiti-inspired pattern in bold colors—vibrant, graphic, and full of movement. It keeps the room from feeling too serious and adds a dose of creative edge.
One of my favorite pieces in the room is the lime green cut-velvet swivel chair tucked into a cozy corner. Its sculptural shape and bright color make it a standout moment, but it’s also incredibly functional. Positioned perfectly for reading, it creates a quiet retreat within the room—a comfortable spot to wind down after a day spent outside in the sun.
Designed for Real Life
While the design of this home is certainly bold, every decision was made with real life in mind.
Beach houses need to be livable. That means materials that can handle sand, seating that encourages people to gather, and layouts that make hosting easy.
The faux-leather sofas wipe clean. The swivel chairs make conversation effortless. The outdoor space invites guests to drift in and out throughout the day.
Nothing feels too precious, but every piece feels intentional.
A Home That Says Yes to Color
And you know I love me some color…just check out my portfolio!
One of the most rewarding parts of working with repeat clients is the trust that develops over time. When bold wallpaper, citron chairs, and lime velvet swivel chairs come up in conversation, the answer isn’t hesitation.
It’s “Let’s do it.”
And that willingness to embrace color and personality is what makes this home feel so special. Instead of a typical neutral beach retreat, this house celebrates individuality and creativity at every turn.
Ready for Summer
As the finishing touches came together, the excitement from the homeowners was unmistakable.
They walked through each room smiling, pointing out favorite pieces and imagining the memories that will unfold here—family visits, beach weekends, summer dinners, and spontaneous gatherings with friends.
Designing a space is always about more than furniture and finishes. It’s about creating a backdrop for life to happen.
This Rehoboth Beach home does exactly that: bold, comfortable, intriguing, and ready for a season full of sunshine, laughter, and a house full of guests.
And I have a feeling this colorful beach retreat is going to be one very popular place to spend the summer…
