the stone colonial: a dramatic bedroom
“Black?! On the ceiling?! Do people do that?!”
That was the exact response I got from my clients when I floated the idea of painting their bedroom ceiling jet black. There was a pause, and a shared look…the moment of design hesitation we all know too well…
And then they were all in.
Welcome to the final installment of The Stone Colonial series, where we’ve lovingly wandered through warm sunrooms, bustling breakfast nooks, and textural layers of cozy living and a love of art. But now, we’ve arrived at the crown jewel: the primary suite. And boy did it bring the drama.
Same Furniture, New Feeling
This room began with a bit of design déjà vu. The clients had relocated their bedroom furniture from their previous home into this new one. And let me tell you—it all fit like a dream. No furniture swaps, no sizing puzzles to solve. The bed, nightstands, and dressers found their place like they were meant for this space.
But even the most well-fitting pieces can feel a little... flat, until you bring in the texture, the tone, the lighting—the feeling.
Texture That Tells a Story
The walls were the first place we added some subtle, story-rich depth. Cue the grasscloth wallpaper.
Adding this richly textured wallpaper was like wrapping the room in a cozy hug
(Think…cashmere scarf)
This wasn’t just a “nice-to-have.” The grasscloth added much-needed warmth to a space that already had strong contrasts—dark bed, crisp white nightstands, bright citron bedding. The texture brought everything together, giving the room a sense of grounding, cohesion, and just a touch of earthiness.
It whispers luxury while winking at comfort. A perfect combo.
And Then, We Looked Up
Let’s go back to that ceiling. The one that sparked the initial gasp.
Painting the ceiling black was a bold move, yes, but in a room where the rest of the palette already had high contrast, it just made sense. It draws your eye up immediately, adds drama in the most elegant way. Glamorous, grounded, and just a bit edgy.
And the cherry on top? That chrome chandelier. It’s a light fixture that doesn’t just hang—it performs. Shaped like a twisted ribbon frozen mid-spin, it casts geometric shadows on the black ceiling like a modern art installation. It’s dramatic, it’s sculptural, and it absolutely shines.
Collected Art, Curated Emotion
Throughout the home, we’ve been building a visual narrative with carefully chosen pieces—each one unique, collected over time, and full of its own personality. And the primary suite was no exception.
Above the headboard hangs a stunning abstract brushstroke piece. The strokes are loose and expressive, bringing movement to the space without stealing the spotlight.
On the adjacent wall, quietly commanding attention, is a portrait of a feminine figure. She’s elegant and strong, a little mysterious, and totally magnetic. She doesn’t just hang there—she steals focus. But in a good way, like a guest at the party you want to be drawn to. She adds drama, sure, but she also softens the space with her presence. And that’s the kind of balance we live for.
Each piece in this room was chosen with care—not to match the bedding or complement the rug, but because it said something. The art here isn’t filler. It’s character. It’s conversation.
The Bed: A Masterclass in Color Layering
Let’s be real; if your bed doesn’t make you want to faceplant into it by 8:30pm, we need to talk.
No, but really, let’s chat.
This one? Consider it the softest kind of statement piece.
We layered a rich citron velvet quilt on the base to inject a dose of warmth and personality, then topped it with an abstract-print duvet that keeps things interesting without going over the top. Pillows that were artfully tossed, (yes, tossed—don’t come for me, pillow perfectionists) add another layer of softness and a little lived-in realness. Because if your bed looks too perfect, how are you supposed to nap in it?
The high-contrast pairing of the bed and nightstands creates that modern-traditional tension we’ve loved throughout this whole home.
A Coffee Corner with a View
At the far end of the room, just beyond the bed, is what I like to call the "pause zone." French doors overlook the backyard, and in front of them sit two deliciously plaid swivel chairs.
That’s right…swivel. Because who doesn’t want to spin around while sipping morning coffee and watching the squirrels argue over sunflower seeds?
…just me? Please tell me it’s not just me talking for the squirrels…
A cozy textured rug anchors the seating nook, and soft accent lighting adds ambiance without overwhelming. It's a little corner of calm—ideal for early risers, late-night chats, or mid-afternoon emails that need a softer landing spot.

Wrapping It All Up
This room was about embracing contrast—soft and structured, bright and moody, cozy and bold. It’s a little daring, a little glam, and entirely livable.
And as we close out The Stone Colonial series, it feels fitting that this primary suite is the final stop. It’s where the day ends, where calm begins, and where that chrome chandelier twinkles one last time before the lights go out.
Thanks for following along on this journey through layered textures, big design ideas, and even bigger heart. This home is full of personality and soul—and designing it has been nothing short of a joy.
