Some projects feel familiar in the very best way. This modern farmhouse in Mechanicsburg, PA was one of those—because it brought me back together with clients I had already worked with and genuinely loved collaborating with. When they reached out again, this time for their new build, I knew it was going to be special.
They came to me early, with builder plans in hand, looking for help furnishing and decorating their great room and dining room. The goal? Spaces that felt elevated but effortless, polished but welcoming—and that made the most of the home’s already stunning architecture.
Architecture Worth Celebrating
This home doesn’t whisper—it confidently sets the tone.
Vaulted ceilings create instant drama in the great room, while painted beams and warm wood accents tucked into the tray ceiling add depth and character overhead. Large black-framed windows line the back of the home, pulling in expansive views of preserved natural land, the pool, and a patio escape beyond. It’s bright, open, and grounded all at once—the kind of architecture designers dream about working with.
Rather than compete with these features, the design leans in, allowing the structure to lead and the furnishings to support.
Grounded, Modern, and Made to Live In
To anchor the scale of the great room, we started with a low-profile modern sectional, keeping sightlines clean and the room feeling intentional, not oversized. A generously scaled rug grounds the seating area and brings warmth underfoot.
From there, we layered in personality:
Black plaid swivel chairs add pattern and movement
Teal velvet ottomans introduce a rich pop of color
A handful of rustic accents soften the modern lines and create a lived-in ease
The result is a space that feels tailored but relaxed—stylish enough to impress, comfortable enough to actually enjoy.
Kitchen & Dining with Contrast
The fresh white kitchen stays crisp and clean, but modern leather barstools add warmth, texture, and just the right amount of contrast.
In the dining room, a round farmhouse table creates an intimate, welcoming feel—perfect for both everyday meals and hosting. The dining chairs feature a contrasting blue back, tying seamlessly into the home’s black, white, and blue color palette and adding visual interest without overwhelming the space.
Throughout the home, the homeowner’s orchid collection is thoughtfully styled—bringing softness, life, and a personal signature that makes the design feel complete.
A Subtle Holiday Moment
A Christmas tree was styled in the great room, decorated simply in red and gold, standing beautifully on its own. With no additional holiday décor competing for attention, the tree becomes a statement—proof that sometimes one intentional moment is all a space needs.
From Builder Plans to Finished Spaces
Using floor plans and renderings, we were able to thoughtfully plan scale, layout, and flow from the very beginning. This process ensured that every piece felt purposeful and that the final result matched the vision—no guesswork, no overfilling, just well-considered design that fits the home.
The Takeaway
This project is a perfect example of what happens when strong architecture meets thoughtful interior design—and when trust has already been built between designer and client. Working with these homeowners again was truly a pleasure. Their kindness, collaboration, and confidence in the process made the experience just as rewarding as the final result.
